Merge pull request #14666 from shanesmith/machine-pidfile
Make `podman machine stop` wait for qemu to exit
2022-06-29 08:51:26 +00:00
Shane Smith 59a7ac210b
Make `podman machine stop` wait for qemu to exit
- New `VMPidFilePath` field in MachineVM config holds the path for the
  qemu PID file

- qemu is now started with the `-pidfile` argument set to `VMPidFilePath`

- Machines created before this won't have the VM PID file configured,
stopping these VMs will revert back to waiting on the state to change
away from `Running`, plus an added 2s sleep to give time for the VM to
exit and to avoid potential issues

- Machines created after this will have a VM PID file configured and
stopping the machine will wait indefinitely for the VM to exit

Brent Baude 99f68898c0 reveal machine error, ignore false state
This PR covers two edge cases discovered by fiddling with machine
manually. It is possible (like after a manual cleanup of a machine)
that a leftover qemu socket file can indicate the prescense of a machine
running.

Also, reveal the error of a Exec.Command by wrapping the generic error
around what was in stderr.

Fix interrupting machine start leaves the machine unstartable
Interrupting a `podman machine start` (ex: with CTRL-C) would leave
`Starting: true` in the machine's config file. Due to #14469 any
subsequent starts would fail since Podman would think the machine is
still in the process of starting.

Fixed here by listening for the interrupt signal and setting `Starting:
false` in the event.

The nolintlint linter does not deny the use of `//nolint`
Instead it allows us to enforce a common nolint style:

- The State() function now returns machine.Starting status instead of an

- The `CheckExclusiveActiveVM()` function returns `true` to prevent

- `podman machine ls` displays "Currently starting" under "Last Up" for

- `podman machine ls` supports `{{.Starting}}` boolean field in the format

enable gocritic linter
The linter ensures a common code style.
- use switch/case instead of else if
- use if instead of switch/case for single case statement
- add space between comment and text
- detect the use of defer with os.Exit()
- use short form var += "..." instead of var = var + "..."
- detect problems with append()
```
newSlice := append(orgSlice, val)
```
This could lead to nasty bugs because the orgSlice will be changed in
place if it has enough capacity too hold the new elements. Thus we
newSlice might not be a copy.

Of course most of the changes are just cosmetic and do not cause any
logic errors but I think it is a good idea to enforce a common style.
This should help maintainability.

add three new config entries Starting (bool) Created (time) LastUp (time) to actually

This PR introduces a test suite for podman machine. It can currently be
run on developers' local machines and is not part of the official CI
testing; however, the expectation is that any work on machine should
come with an accompanying test.

At present, the test must be run on Linux. It is untested on Darwin.
There is no Makefile target for the test. It can be run like `ginkgo -v
pkg/machine/test/.`. It should be run as a unprivileged user.

Brent Baude 2ac897aa0d Machine refactor - part 1
the way machine was written was very adjunct and as such is in dire need
of refactoring to better structures and structure methods where
appropriate. the weekest part is specifically around all the files that
machine requires and how some are just dynamically built on the fly.

this pr defines a new machinefile type which allows us to work with the
file and also takes into account the use of symlinks which are going to
be needed on macos due to its relatively short file length restriction.

also, added unit tests for new methods as well as anywhere else I saw a
need.

Burt Holzman cdda1924a0 Explicitly use IPv4 to check if podman-machine VM is listening
When starting a VM that has been configured with volume mounts, the
podman client attempts to connect via TCP to localhost, which runs
gvproxy to proxy an ephemeral port to the VM's ssh port. Previously,
gvproxy was listening on all interfaces and IP addresses, but this
behavior has changed to listening only on the IPv4 loopback address.

Without this change, if a newer build of gvproxy is used, a podman
machine configured with volume mounts will hang forever after "podman
machine start" with "Waiting for VM ...".

esendjer a8928a3caa ignition: propagate proxy settings from a host into a vm
Set proxy settings (such as `HTTP_PROXY`, and others)
for the whole guest OS with setting up `DefaultEnvironment`
with a `systemd` configuration file `default-env.conf`,
a `profile.d` scenario file - `default-env.sh` and
a `environment.d` configuration file `default-env.conf`

The **actual** environment variables are read by podman
at a start, then they are encrypted with base64 into
a single string and after are provided into a VM through
QEMU Firmware Configuration (fw_cfg) Device

Inside a VM a systemd service `envset-fwcfg.service`
reads the providead encrypted string from fw_cfg, decrypts
and then adds to the files
 - `/etc/systemd/system.conf.d/default-env.conf`
 - `/etc/profile.d/default-env.sh`
 - `/etc/environment.d/default-env.conf`
At the end this service execute `systemctl daemon-reload`
to propagate new variables for systemd manager

Anders F Björklund a3326e23d8 Check the mount type for future compatibility
There are other mount types available, such as NFS or SMB,
or one could use reverse sshfs for better compatibility.

It could either be a global option, or it could perhaps be
overridden for each volume (like the container volumes).

Refactor the creation of the options string or array.

Allow specifying the volume as read-only, if desired.

podman machine improve port forwarding
This commits adds port forwarding logic directly into podman. The
podman-machine cni plugin is no longer needed.

The following new features are supported:
 - works with cni, netavark and slirp4netns
 - ports can use the hostIP to bind instead of hard coding 0.0.0.0
 - gvproxy no longer listens on 0.0.0.0:7777 (requires a new gvproxy
   version)
 - support the udp protocol

With this we no longer need podman-machine-cni and should remove it from
the packaging. There is also a change to make sure we are backwards
compatible with old config which include this plugin.

Podman machine remove is now called `rm`.

Podman machine create now supports resizing the image to the value of
--disk-size as provided. The default is to 10G.

Added systemd unit file on guest via ignition that sends a Ready message
to the host over a virtio-socket so that we know when the VM is booted
and ready for use.

Podman machine commands no longer require a VM name as an argument. A
default VM name is defined and if no VM name is provided as a arg, the
default will be used.
