Reword Pod readiness section
- “Pod Ready++” is stable, so word the documentation accordingly.
- In the documentation, call this “Pod readiness”
- Related tweaks
Reword Pod lifetime section
- mention StatefulSet
- omit mentioning ReplicationController as it's deprecated
- reword to suggest that the list of workload resources is non-exhaustive
and use glossary tooltips as well.
* Currently documentation mentions resolvable FQDNs for services only
* Documentation for pods is confusing in regards of local pod `hostname`
wich actually does not match in-cluster DNS resolution
* This PR clarifies FQDN schema that is used for pod DNS resolution
- Mention address family in pod concept
Preparing to reword this for IPv4 / IPv6 dual stack
- Fix capitalization for “cluster”, “container” and “volume”
These are not resources you manage via kubectl
- Harmonize short descriptions for workload objects in glossary
- Expand definition of StatefulSet
- Use tooltip for “kubelet”
- Revise pod template text
- Revise What's Next section
After Fix - Local volumes do not currently support dynamic provisioning, however a StorageClass
should still be created to delay volume binding until Pod scheduling.
Each Node has an associated Lease object in the kube-node-lease namespace. Lease is a lightweight resource, which improves the performance of the node heartbeats as the cluster scales.
Move the job controller example so that the example of Job controller follows
immediately after the concept of what a job controller does in introduced.

* Fixed outdated ECR credential debug message (#18631)
* Fixed outdated ECR credential debug message
The log message for troubleshooting kubelet auto fetching ECR credentils issue has been changed (noticed since 1.14), and the new message reads like this when verbose log level is set to 3:
- `aws_credentials.go:109] unable to get ECR credentials from cache, checking ECR API`
- `aws_credentials.go:116] Got ECR credentials from ECR API for <Your ECR AWS Account ID>.dkr.ecr.us-east-1.amazonaws.com`
This is based on the kubelet source code:
https://github.com/kubernetes/kubernetes/blob/release-1.14/pkg/credentialprovider/aws/aws_credentials.go#L91
This PR is to fix this and to avoid confusion for more people who are troubleshooting the kubelet ECR issue.

* Correct description of kubectl (#18172)
* Correct description of kubectl
Given that `kubectl` is not a [command line interface (CLI)](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Command-line_interface), I suggest calling it what it is -- a control utility (ctl = control). The term "tool" is commonly used in place of "utility," including the `kubectl` docs.
A CLI presents the user with a command prompt at which the user can enter multiple command lines that a command-line interpreter interprets and processes. Think of `bash`, `emacs`, or a SQL shell. Since `kubectl` is not run in a shell, it is not a CLI.
Here are related docs that correctly refer to `kubectl` as a "command-line tool":
- https://kubernetes.io/docs/reference/tools/#kubectl
- https://kubernetes.io/docs/reference/glossary/?fundamental=true#term-kubectl
- https://kubernetes.io/docs/tasks/tools/install-kubectl/
- https://kubernetes.io/docs/reference/kubectl/kubectl/

* Add kubectl patch example with quotes on Windows (#18853)
* Add kubectl patch example with quotes on Windows
When running the `kubectl patch` example, on Windows systems you get an
error when passing the patch request in single quotes. Passing it in
double quotes with the inner ones escaped produced the desired behavior
as is in the example given for Linux systems. I've added a small note
for Windows users to have that in mind.

* Use Hugo note shortcode
Windows note is placed inside a
[shortcode](https://kubernetes.io/docs/contribute/style/style-guide/#shortcodes)
to be consistent with the style guide.

* Remove shell Markdown syntax
I've removed the shell syntax from the Windows example and have changed
the description to be the same as the one used in
[jsonpath](https://kubernetes.io/docs/reference/kubectl/jsonpath/)
document to be more consistent. The jsonpath example uses cmd syntax,
though it is note inside a note shortcode, therefore I've opted out of
using any syntax as it seems to break rendering inside the shortcode.

* Add cmd markdown syntax and fix order list
I've tested this locally with `make docker-serve` on my Linux machine
and finally things are looking better, I've managed to address these two
issues:
- the Windows example is now inside `note` shortcode and also the cmd
syntax renders correctly on the page
- the list of steps broke after the first one, I've indented a paragraph
and now the steps are in the expected order

* Remove command prompt from example
According to the [style guide](https://kubernetes.io/docs/contribute/style/style-guide/#don-t-include-the-command-prompt), the command prompt should not be included when showing an example. This commit removes it for consistency with the style guide.

* Correcting name of concept 'Container Enviorment Variables'
This page discusses the container environment and container environment variables are part of it. So removing a 'variable' word to make it more correct.
* Correcting references
Correcting references
* Correcting reference links
Correcting reference links
* Expand list of places Kubernetes can run
As well as GKE, there are AKS, EKS, and more.
* Add page description
* Link to blog post about Borg
The blog post has (a better) link to Google's paper about Borg. Because
of the historical relevance of that paper and that blog article to the
history of Kubernetes, I think it's OK to link there.
Linking to the blog article provides a less academic introduction to the
history of Kubernetes, with the option to click through and learn things
in detail.
* Remove mentions of unsupported Kubernetes versions
No need to mention supported-since-this-version details for Kubernetes
releases that are now out of support.
* Warn about disabling preemption
* Tweak wording
* Add What's next section
* Tweak Pod priority troubleshooting advice
Reshape the advice about pod priority troubleshooting to explain
user-induced issues (and define expected behavior). If the reader
detects behavior that does not match the documentation, they have
observed a bug and can report that via the usual routes.
* Rewords notes on Pod priority vs. QoS
* Move warning into page body
Issue #17556
Problem:
Below Lines are incorrect
If you specify multiple nodeSelectorTerms associated with nodeAffinity types, then the pod can be scheduled onto a node if one of the nodeSelectorTerms is satisfied.
If you specify multiple matchExpressions associated with nodeSelectorTerms, then the pod can be scheduled onto a node only if all matchExpressions can be satisfied.
Proposed Solution:
They need to be corrected to below
If you specify multiple nodeSelectorTerms associated with nodeAffinity types, then the pod can be scheduled onto a node only if all nodeSelectorTerms can be satisfied.
If you specify multiple matchExpressions associated with nodeSelectorTerms, then the pod can be scheduled onto a node if one of the matchExpressions is satisfied.
* Update what-is-kubernetes.md
The sub heading felt awkward as it was asking a question, but there was no question mark. As question marks in headings are not ideal in technical documentation anyway, I thought swapping the word order slightly made it sounds _slightly_ better.
* Update content/en/docs/concepts/overview/what-is-kubernetes.md

* Reword API Server aggregation
* Document custom resources ahead of APIService
CustomResourceDefinition is the newer, shinier and often more
appropriate resource to help with cases where APIService was not a good
fit. Switch order to mention the custom resources page first, which
introduces both APIService and CustomResourceDefinition.
* Add whats next section to PersistentVolume page
Add whats next section to PersistentVolume page
* Adding references to PersistentVolume page
Adding references to PersistentVolume page
* Use feature state for non-preempting PriorityClasses
* PreemptionPolicy requires NonPreemptingPriority feature gate
* Remove alpha qualifier from section title and decrease example heading level
* Use singular of PriorityClass in the heading
* Note CronJob timezone comes from system timezone
The timezone for the kube-controller-manager (or if that's broken apart,
the cronjob controller) determines when CronJobs are scheduled.
This reverts commit bad124b857.
* Expand details about CronJob timezone

The pod lifecycle documentation erroneously indicated `Unschedulable` as a possible `type` of pod condition. That's not true. Only four condition types exist. The `Unschedulable` value is not a type, but one of the possible reasons of the `PodScheduled` condition type.

* Add note for LB behaviour for cordoned nodes.
See also https://github.com/kubernetes/kubernetes/issues/65013
This is a reasonably common pitfall: `kubectl cordon <all nodes>` will also drop all LB traffic to the cluster, but this is not documented anywhere but in issues, when found it is usually already too late.

* Exchanged developers with containers
The meaning of original sentence: "Coordinating ports across multiple **developers** is very difficult to do at scale..." is not really obvious. `https://openservicebrokerapi.org/` contains information such as `what are service brokers?`, how they work, building services for Kubernetes using `Open Service Broker API` etc.
`Object Metadata` section is misleading, as the Concept's overview is covering what master and non-master nodes are and list of objects. But there is no discussion on `Object Metadata` till the end and all of sudden there is Object Metadata section with no background introduction or definition, and just a reference to `Annotations` which is confusing if you read the content from the beginning. So it would be better to remove this as it is covered later here `https://kubernetes.io/docs/concepts/overview/working-with-objects/annotations/`.

Init Containers were specified using custom annotations in k8s 1.5. In
k8s 1.6, these annotations were replaced with the
`Pod.Spec.initContainers` collection and the old annotations were
deprecated in 1.6 and no longer supported in 1.8. There's no reason to
clutter the docs with the old annotation syntax.
Removed ambiguous word 'temporarily', as namespace set using that method, is not temporary. It is permanent for a current resource and there is no concept of a temporary namespace in K8s.
Also, for consisteny '--namespace' flag added after the actual command.

Condition to match all the fields returned in k8s 1.14+.
* add information about Allocatable to nodes.md
Since k8s 1.6, a Node object returns information about both the node's
capacity as well as the allocatable resources on the node. The latter is
a representation of the resources that are available for normal pods to
consume.
This patch adds information about capacity vs. allocatable to the
documentation about nodes and provides a link to where the reader can
find more information about reserving compute resources.
* Correction: sysctl entries aren't annotations
First, thank you for your work on this documentation. It means so much to so many users. I found that the sysctl documentation linked here explains that sysctl pod security policy entries are in the spec field, not done via annotation. This corrects it, using as much of the original language as possible from the linked sysctl documentation.
* Update pod-security-policy.md
* Adding example to show labels in POD yaml
This page talk about labels and its usage. Also it talk about syntax for specifying labels. But it does not show how we can have labels in resource manifest. So with this PR i am adding example which shows that how we can have labels in pod manifest.

* Adding annotation example
Adding example to show how annotation looks like in manifest. This will help users to understand where exactly we can use the annotations whose details are already given on this page. * Resolving review comments
Resolving review comments
This patch promotes re-use of the existing kube-proxy glossary
definition by referencing it from overview/components.md. Similarly, we
move the definition of Container Runtime into a new glossary definition
so that other pages may refer to it.
* Update images.md

* Reword glossary entry for Service
New wording should be more suitable for inclusion via a
glossary_definition shortcode.
* Improve What's Next section for Service concept
* Rename Services concept to singular
This matches other concept documentation, eg Deployment.
* Use documentation IP address range
1.2.3.4 is outside the blocks reserved for documentation.
* Reword Service concept description
Services direct traffic to Pods, not containers
* Write IPVS in uppercase
* Use glossary references where appropriate
* Link from Pod overview to detailed Pod concept
* Assume that privileged containers are stable
* Improve wording
* Write Pod in upper case
As Pod is an API object, write it in upper case.
This patch swaps all uses with extensions/v1beta1 with the new
networking.k8s.io/v1beta1 apiVersion for the Ingress resource.

* fix an offense against the style guide.
> Refer to API objects without saying “object,” unless omitting “object” leads to an awkward construction.
* fix another one.
removed hyperlink from "An example" in the statement An example of this approach is a small container running logrotate periodically. However, it's recommended to use stdout and stderr directly and leave rotation and retention policies to the kubelet.
This fix is for issue #13656
I've attempted to have it make more sense by removing the word 'is'. Optionally, depending on the intended meaning, the sentence could read differently by leaving the word 'is' alone and changing the word 'through' to 'though'.
k8s does not support nested namespaces but this is not specified anywhere in the document. I find this is the right place to document it as we introduce namespace concept here. Also these details are important to mention specifically for users who are coming from Docker UCP background.

* Update network doc for ip-per-pod reqs
As per SIG-Network discussion, we can relax the requirement for all
nodes to be able to reach all pods on those platforms that do not
support hostNetwork.
The current thinking on Windows support is that hostNetwork is not a
requirement for Window users. As such, satisfying the old requirement
is very difficult and has no practical benefit.
This DOES NOT change the requirements for platforms that support
hostNetwork (e.g. Linux) nor does it make hostNetwork optional for Linux
nodes.
This PR also removes most comparisons to Docker, as they are stale and
no longer germane, and cleans up some of the text.
* Feedback on contents
The changes are in line with one of the request for documentation update as per PR #55807 wherein it was observed that the preStop hook is not commissioned when the container is already in the terminated or completed state.

Currently, there's confusion on whether all voluntary disruptions are constrained by PDBs.

Address the issue raised in
https://github.com/kubernetes/kubernetes/issues/73808, where it became
clear it would be helpful for there to be a reminder for the user that
they are responsible for managing the StatefulSet which provides DNS
names for the pods in a StatefulSet.
Cleaned up the section __Revision History Limit__ to reflect the default value of `.spec.revisionHistoryLimit` being 10, instead of saying "All old ReplicaSets will be kept by default"
* Adding container state details in documentation
* Adding container state details to documentation
* Incorporating changes suggested in review by /ryanmcginnis
* First draft of the updates to the ReplicaSet Docs
To start with, I tried to cleanup the docs to adhere to the style guide https://kubernetes.io/docs/contribute/style/style-guide/. I then added some description of the ReplicaSet-Pod link via the owner reference field and behavior by it. I also made a clarification on the ReplicaSet demo where it was being redundant for the sake of demonstrating the different forms of usage. I consider this draft incomplete as I still lack knowledge of how the pod labels affect the behavior.
* Clearing up RC refs & explaining acquisition behavior
I'm beginning to address the cr by cleaning up references to the ReplicationController and making it clear that RCs are discouraged/old. I then expanded on the behavior of ReplicaSet in the presence of pods it can acquire but are not created directly by it.
* Mismatched link seems to have disappeared from preview
"As with all other Kubernetes API objects," etc... is present in the sibling concepts/workloads/controllers/ files, so I am hesitant to change that w/o changing the others, but I did abbreviate it.
"The `.spec.template` is the only required field of the `.spec`." is false, we also need the selector
Trying to address passive voice
Cleaned up Writing a ReplicaSet Manifest section
removed How to use a ReplicaSet section as it has redundant info from the examples and Alternatives section
Expanded examples a bit
Cleared up passive voice
* refactoring link to example yaml
* adding pod-rs test case
* Addressing Steve Perry's comments
Capitalize Pod throughout.
Link is not rendering correctly. Use () instead of [] for the path.
Ending with "for the creation" seems vague to me. Maybe this:
"...reach the desired number. When a ReplicaSet needs to create new Pods, it uses its Pod template."
Suggestion: "is via the Pod's metadata.ownerReferences field." That way the reader won't jump to the incorrect conclusion that we're talking about the ReplicaSet's metadata.ownerReferences field.
with fields, including a selector that
and plans accordingly
Our style for headings is sentence case. So this heading would be "How a ReplicaSet works".
Several headings in this topic need to be converted to sentence case.

The LimitedResource type has the field "MatchScopes" as a sibling to

fields used in the YAML, to make it clearer in infix style that the
operator binds the scope name to a (possibly empty) set of values.

* Rename encryption-at-rest related objects (#11059)
EncryptionConfig was renamed to EncryptedConfiguration and added to
the `apiserver.config.k8s.io` API group in Kubernetes 1.13.
The feature was previously in alpha and was not handling versions
properly, which lead to an originally unnoticed `v1` in the docs.
Also, the `--experimental-encryption-provider-config` flag is now called
just `--encryption-provider-config`.

Link back to the v1.12 version of the etcd3 doc for

I updated the kube-apiserver reference manually,
unsure if that is auto-generated somehow.
The federation-apiserver can still potentially
support etcd2 so I didn't touch that.

There are master/node yaml files that reference
etcd2.service that are likely highly out of date.

StatefulSet deletion does not have any guarantees of orderly termination of pods as is suggested by the documentation. Prior to 1.11 kubectl did scale down StatefulSets before deleting them, but this went away after the removal of reapers. Ref discussion in #68627.
This change updates the documentation to reflect this.
Wording is confusing to beginners - in the sentence before, it is just being explained that containers in the same pod are indeed run on the same physical host. Hopefully this clarifies that.

default have manifests, another would be all the tests in the
conformance test suite. Here we capture the best practices for everyone
to start using manifests in their own workflows.

This is an attempt to clear up a bit of the wording around an image's tag and how that impacts the ImagePullPolicy.
The wording to me presently suggests *all* you need to do is use `:latest` as an image tag and that will change the `ImagePullPolicy` to latest.
This is not the case that I've observed. As it stands now, `:latest` only affect the `ImagePullPolicy` if that attribute is not present on the pod's specification.

* Make navigation and UI strings i18n friendly
This commit
* Extracts most UI strings into i18n bundles so they can be translated
* Makes a proper Hugo menu out of the hardcoded menu that is shown on smaller screens
* Changes the language selector logic to navigate to the current page in the other language if possible (e.g. the translation). If not possible, it takes you to the home page for that language.
For testing, this commit also adds Norwegian as a new language. This is turned off.
* Make the home page into reusable and translatable blocks
This commit adds a set of block type shortcodes that is then used to build the home page.
* These shortcodes gets common image resources from a new headless bundle. These resources can be inherited or overridden by translations.
* The hardcoded case studies section on the home page is replaced with a query and a loop.
* The hardcoded feature list on the home page is replaed qith a query and a loop.
